Windows Error
Windows Error 0x80070002: The System Cannot Find the File Specified
Windows Update (or another process) couldn't find a file it expected to exist.
What This Error Means
This corresponds to ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND — a process, most commonly Windows Update, tried to reference a file that it expected to exist but couldn't locate, usually due to a corrupted or incomplete update cache.
Why It Occurs
Typically caused by corruption in the Windows Update cache/database, an interrupted previous update leaving files in an inconsistent state, or corrupted system files more broadly.
Symptoms
- ⚠ Windows Update fails with this code, often repeatedly on the same update
- ⚠ May also appear outside Windows Update, for other file-referencing operations
Common Causes
- • Corrupted Windows Update cache
- • System files corrupted or missing
- • An interrupted previous update left the update database in an inconsistent state
How to Fix It
- Run System File Checker: open Command Prompt as Administrator and run `sfc /scannow`
- Run DISM to repair the Windows image: `DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth`
- Reset Windows Update components (stop wuauserv, rename SoftwareDistribution/Catroot2, restart)
- Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
| sfc /scannow | Scan for and repair corrupted system files |
| DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth | Repair the underlying Windows system image, which sfc relies on |
Verification
- ✓ Confirm sfc /scannow completes with "did not find any integrity violations" or successfully repairs found issues
- ✓ Retry the failed update
Prevention
- → Avoid forcibly interrupting Windows Update mid-install (e.g. shutting down during an update)
- → Run periodic sfc /scannow checks as routine maintenance
